The Alliance
The Alliance of the Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church was established in 1939 and is the longest standing social and service group in the church. In 1939 a group of forty women met and voted to form an organization that would be called The Women’s Alliance. Later the name was changed to the Alliance to become more inclusive.
Today we continue to maintain the original goals of the founders: to support church and outreach activities and further fellowship among our members and the church congregation. Along with yearly dues of $10.00 and profits from the Clearance Corner located in the Resale Shop, funds are raised to help us reach these goals. Recent purchases include a stove and microwave for the coffee kitchen and a television for the library. Donations were made to the Boston Trip, Symphony of Tables and a fund raiser held by the Grosse Pointe League of Women Voters. Yearly contributions are made to various local charities such as Habitat for Humanity-Grosse Pointe Partners, Planned Parenthood-Mid and South Michigan, DIA, Belle Isle Conservancy, and Services for Older Citizens.
The Alliance holds monthly luncheon meetings the second Tuesday of the month from October through June with speakers who provide interesting ideas and experiences. Our traditional December meeting is a potluck luncheon held in the church gallery with a concert by the Grosse Pointe North High School Choir. In May a trip to a place of interest in the community is planned with lunch at a local restaurant. Alliance luncheons are open to all church members and their guests.
